FROM OVERWHELMED TO IN CONTROL
FROM OVERWHELMED TO IN CONTROL
I caught myself a few weeks ago, not wanting to get out of bed. Mondays are usually my favourite day as it’s a fresh start, full of new opportunities but this morning I was hitting snooze, scrolling my phone and just could not find the motivation to get up.
I dragged myself to open the laptop and got hit with 86 unread emails, a full calendar, g-chats blinking and tasks that were due. I could feel my throat tighten and my heart racing. I felt apathetic.
For a good 15 min I was just staring at my screen, not knowing where to begin. I completed the morning huddle, then I just sat there staring out through the window.
I was feeling overwhelmed, not from everything that was on my plate but from the feeling of having lost control. The truth was that I did not know the status of the different projects that I was working on. My priorities had all been mashed together.
CREATE FROM YOUR FUTURE NOT YOUR PAST
Our brains are prediction machines and are constantly using information from past experience to predict what the future will hold.
If we have had a bad experience in the past, we are quick to project that onto a future experience.
But what if your past has nothing to do with your future?
What if you could shift your focus and rather than looking at what is already created, start looking at what you WANT TO CREATE. What if you were to use your imagination and construct an ideal vision of your future and create from there?
How would your life be different?
CHRONIC PROCRASTINATOR?
CHRONIC PROCRASTINATOR?
Are you one of those who have always been a procrastinator? Is this just a part of your identity and there is no way to change it?
It’s crucial to understand:How you identify yourself and how you identify your life will affect how you show up in it.
So, when you hear yourself saying:
• I’m really busy
• It’s always been like that
• That’s just the way I am
These words affect your productivity and what you’re able to do in the world. They PUT A CAP on what’s possible for you.
EVERYTHING HAS TWO SIDES: THE WANTED AND THE UNWANTED
The side that has your attention will affect how you feel. Can you challenge yourself to find the wanted in the unwanted situation?
When you change the way you look at things, the thing you look at changes.

THE POWER OF EVALUATION
As the year comes to an end I like to make time for reflection.
Some questions that I ask myself:
• What did I accomplish?
• Which situations pushed me outside of my comfort zone?
• In which area did I grow?
• What is my best memory from this year?
YOUR THOUGHTS CREATES YOUR FEELINGS
Your thoughts send a signal to your body to release a certain set of chemicals which causes you to feel a certain way. We call this our emotions.
Our emotions then send a signal to the brain which confirms the thought that we just had, which causes us to think more similar thoughts. This lets the body know to release more of the same hormones which increases the feeling.
Now we are in a thought-feeling loop. We call this a state of mind. Our thoughts are triggering our body to feel and our body is triggering our mind to think.
EMOTIONAL BANK ACCOUNT
Like you have red and black numbers linked to deposits and withdrawals on your bank account, you have a similar system for your relationships called your emotional bank account.
Every relationship in your life is either in black or red depending on the level of investment done up until this point. This includes the relationship with yourself.
Withdrawals happen automatically while deposits require an active investment.
PAIN VS SUFFERING
PAIN VS SUFFERING
Pain is something we experience when the opposite of what we want happens.
We don’t get the promotion
We get sick
A loved one pass away
These are all experiences in life that cause pain. Pain is inevitable but suffering is optional.
So what is suffering then?
Suffering is something we insert on top of the pain when we ARGUE WITH REALITY. When we think thoughts like:
This shouldn’t be happening
Life shouldn’t be this hard
It’s not fair
SETTING AN INTENTION
An intention is an aim or a plan. Setting an intention helps you direct your focus. It allows you to be in charge of how your energy is invested.
We do have control of our intention, we do not have control of the outcome.
Being too attached to the outcome can sometimes be problematic as it blocks us from seeing other possibilities that would be as good or better than the original outcome.
Living aligned with your intention allows you to respond skilfully to any given moment. It invites flexibility and clarity into your life.
DELAYED GRATIFICATION - THE PRICE TAG FOR SUCCESS
Building strength in the long haul requires short term discomfort.
We are programmed for instant gratification. We want it all and we want it now.
When you learn the skill of enjoying delayed gratification you step into emotional adulthood.
THE IMPORTANCE OF DIRECTIONS
Many times we are so fixated on growing and evolving. We practise and practise. Rinsing and repeating. Enhancing our skills but we miss to reflect on what it is that we become better at.
We are so focused on moving forward that we sometimes forget to check if the direction in which we are going (sometimes running) is actually the direction of our goals.
MOTIVATED BY OUR FEELINGS
Our thoughts affect how we feel.
We think that our circumstances have to change in order for us to feel in a certain way, when really it's the opposite.
When you feed your mind with powerful thoughts, you generate empowering feelings which inspire you to take actions that support creating the result that you want.
To create greater results, allow yourself to dream about an appealing future that inspires you to take action aligned with your goal.
FEEL GREAT - DO GREAT
When you feel great you do great.
By changing the way you are feeling, you change the result you create.
Your thoughts create your feelings - so start observing the way you are thinking.
What filter are you seeing the world through?
DEFAULT RESPONSE OF THE BRAIN
Brain’s top 3 focus:
Stay safe
Instant gratification
Minimum effort
All three survival strategies that USED TO WORK FOR US when we lived in an environment full of threats to our physical survival are NOW WORKING AGAINST US. Our environment has changed but our brain has not developed at the same speed and is massively behind.
If you think that the software running automatically will be enough to live a great life, you might want to consider thinking again.
WHAT TYPE OF COMMUNITY ARE YOU CREATING?
Start with yourself first. Whatever it is that you are valuing in your community, that you want to contribute to, it all begins in the relationship you create with yourself.
Between you and you, the most important relationship there is.
Be an inspirational light to people around you.
Let your light shine bright!

EMPOWERING BELIEFS
Your beliefs are like a radio station. You can only play one station at the time. Practice directing your mind to the frequency that support your goal.
